JWP Keeping Kids Safe With Special Dog

The Janesville Waldorf Pemberton School District is taking proactive measures to make sure your kid is safe at school. News 12's Amber Malusky explains what they're doing and why it's important for students and the community. JWP School District is teaming up with the Interquest Detection Canines of Minnesota, some might call them drug dogs, but for this school district, it's a way to ensure safety. "We have to be vigilant and persistent in our efforts to make sure that we can try and keep our youth of the community safe." Interquest Detection Center is a local franchise in St. Peter with special trained dogs. "What we're trained to inspect for are illegal drugs, alcoholic beverages, gun powder and medication." With several alerts over the years, the school district has never found illegal drugs in their schools, the special dogs are meant to keep it that way. Ulmen says, "It's a preventative measure, Prevention is a big thing." And the students have been informed and know exactly what to expect. "It's not like I'm sitting here saying I want to catch somebody with drugs today it's saying is if we come in and inspect the kids mindset to be let's not take it to school because we never know when that dogs coming." This is Kory. He's 6 years old and he went though 3-6 months of significant training to find things like illegal drugs, alcohol, medication, and gun powder. "He's looking for those odors that he's been trained to find and he believes that's where his toy is." When it comes to searching the lockers for real, Kory's scent training will come in to play the same way he learned it... as a game of hide and seek. In Janesville, Amber Malusky news 12.
