It's Friday, and for many residents and retailers downtown that means the early morning light brings remnants of late-night fun.News 12's Kira Klapper has more on community-wide efforts to keep downtown sidewalks clean.It's Friday afternoon and the sidewalks have been swept ...But just this morning, the downtown Mankato sidewalks were filled with remnants from last night's bar fun.Bernie Fasnacht, Superintendent of Parks for the City of Mankato, says, ''Oh, yes, there's always extra stuff that's picked up.''Bernie Fasnacht and the City of Mankato Parks team tends to the city's flowers, planters ... and litter.They say the weekend bar-hoppers often litter sidewalks with beer bottles and pizza boxes.But with garbage cans all over the downtown courtyard, they say this shouldn't be the case.Fasnacht says, ''It's a very simple task, but it keeps our downtown beautiful. So if you can help us out that way, that would be deeply appreciated.''KK says, ''Business owners and retailers in this neighborhood say having to clean-up the sidewalk every weekend morning is worth the trade-off of the excitement of being located downtown.''Another perk of being downtown are the planters, filled with blooming flowers... but, on the weekends, garbage tends to bloom as well.Tony Frentz of Frentz Construction in downtown Mankato says, ''I mean, it's downtown here, but we do go out there, whenever I see something, I just go out there and pick it up.''Tony Frentz of Frentz Construction on Cherry Street often finds himself cleaning up bottles and butts leftover from the night before... but he says it just comes with the territory of being downtown.Frentz says, ''Sometimes when you see cigarette butts outside, it's not the greatest, but it isn't a problem.''Because it's a problem whose burden is shared, by all the community members who care...Fasnacht says, ''Help us out. There's lots of garbage containers, and we appreciate your help.''In Mankato, Kira Klapper, News 12.
