Former Baghdad Museum Director Speaks at GAC

We've seen and heard countless perspectives on the War in Iraq.  Tonight at Gustavus Adolphus College, a special guest gave the perspective from the art community, and discussed what's being done to preserve Iraq's massive artistic and archeological history.

The initial invasion of Iraq kept the world glued to the screen, with shock and awe, tanks and ground troops gathering most of the attention.  But behind the scenes, and beyond the cameras, the real chaos ensued.

Dr. Donny George Youkhanna says, "The people entered the museum and they were there in the museum for three days looting, and they got over 15,000 objects from the museum."  Dr. George as he is known in the Western world, is the former director general of the National Museum in Baghdad.  And tonight he shared his experiences of Baghdad descending into anarchy as Coalition Forces were taking over.

Both the bad, which included a tank blast into the children's museum, and a story of helpful Iraqis who cared about the museum as much as he did.  Dr. George says, "Rely on our word of honor, we were in the museum during the looting. We could not stop them. They were all armed. But then we decided to take things into our homes and when we see that the museum is well protected, we will bring them back."

Facing numerous death threats because of his Assyrian Christian heritage Dr. George and his family were forced to flee Iraq in 2006.  Of the approximately 15,000 artifacts looted from the National Museum in Baghdad, about half of them have been returned with the help of Dr. George.

But what he really hopes to achieve is to prevent future desecration of the world's historical treasures in the future.  Dr. George says, "For me, any museum is a very important museum. So the security of museums should be reviewed because what happened in the Iraq museum, with the chaos that was there, could happen to any museum."
