In Health Watch:Most people dread going to the dentist... but a new high-tech device is making one necessary treatment a little easier to swallow.Dr. Sean Kenniff explains...Robert Green has spent a lot of time in the dentist's chair...But he dreads getting dental impressions. The paste used to make the molds makes him sick.Robert Green, Patient: 'you gag when you do it. its about one of the most unpleasant things about being in the dental chair.'Now lasers are making the procedure much more palatable. .. No more goopy paste, no more trays, no more mess. This is the Cadent Itero system... And some dentists say it is the cleanest and quickest way to a perfect smile.Dr. Gordon Sokoloff says, 'This is going to replace impressions as we know it.'The device scans the surfaces of the teeth -- and in just minutes generates a three-dimensional, holographic image. The dentist then emails that image to a factory -- where a mold is made out of polyurethane. Dentists say it's a faster and much more precise way to make crowns, bridges and dental implants.Dr. Sokoloff says, 'It's a much better fit because you're not dealing with the dimensional instability of an impression material.'The machine has limits.. It can't be used to build full or partial dentures...For robert though.. There is no downside ...Green says, 'This was a walk in the park. it was nothing.'And patients know... A care-free visit to the dentist is really something to smile about.Dr. Sean kenniff, cbs news, miami.
