Sibley East School Official Charged with Sexual Misconduct

A Sibley East high school employee is out on bail tonight after being accused of having sex with a student. News 12's Erick Lind joins us in the newsroom with information on the charges. Dion, the Sibley County Sheriff's department says it received a report of an ongoing sexual relationship between a school official and a 16-year old juvenile female back on September 29th of this year. Monday the department arrested Kevin David Jones of Gaylord. Jones is the transportation director and not a teacher. Authorities are charging him with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Assistant Sibley County Attorney Don Lannoye says, "That's the most serious sex offense that there is in Minnesota. Those allegations have been made alleging numerous sexual encounters between the defendant and the victim."According to the criminal complaint, Jones and the student started their relationship by just talking, texting, and e-mailing in the summer of 2006. The student told authorities she spent almost every day at the bus garage where Jones works in 2006 and 2007. In the summer of 2007, the student was employed by the school as a janitor and sometimes worked for Jones. The report states during that time Jones became more romantically involved with the student, having dozens of sexual encounters. The report also states in the fall of 2007, Jones and the student had sex on a school bus in the Arlington garage, at his office in the garage, and twice in his own home. School officials deferred all questions to their attorney Tony Nerud. Nerud says Jones has been suspended with pay since the date the complaint was issued. Nerud says the school district's concern for the protection of their students is first and foremost. Nerud adds that the school board will review the future of Jones employment with the district in the upcoming weeks. The next preliminary hearing is scheduled for November 6th.
