This weekend we'll gain an hour of sleep with the end of daylight saving time. That extra hour is the perfect time to do something that could save your life.Fire officials say Saturday night or Sunday morning is the perfect time to change your smoke detector batteries. They also say if it's been over ten years since you installed your smoke detector, it's time to replace it.The worst thing to do is ignore the units altogether.Mankato assistant Fire Marshal Michelle Colehour says, "A lot of times people just think that they are a nuisance, maybe they have them in the wrong place so they get a lot of nuisance alarms, so they just take the batteries out because they don't want to listen to it, and it's not there when they need it."Officials say 26 percent of fire deaths in Minnesota last year were due to homes without working smoke detectors.
