The Day in Medicine

Welcome back.If you've tested negative for breast cancer genes...Don't assume you're in the clear.Meg Oliver has that story and more in today's health watch report.Good and bad news on cholesterol from the American Heart Association.Levels of so-called "bad" cholesterol among adult Americans have fallen since 1980, but harmful tri-glyceride levels have nearly quintupled over the same period.Tri-glyercides are markers in the blood often caused by obesity.Researchers say lower cholesterol levels may reflect a greater awareness of the dangers of a high-fat diet, but the obesity problem has only gotten worse.Women who test negative for breast cancer genes could still be in danger of getting the disease.A new study finds women who have a strong family history of breast cancer are four times more likely to develop the illness even if they don't carry the genes.Researchers hope the findings will help doctors detect breast cancer earlier in women of high-risk.There's new reason this morning to make sure your doctor is still working.A new survey shows nearly half of primary care physicians in the U-S feel overworked and plan to either cut back on patients or quit medicine entirely. In addition, a majority would not recommend medicine as a career. Those are some of today's top medical stories.I'm Meg Oliver - CBS News - New York.
