Blue Earth Votes to Expand Airport

The Blue Earth City Council has approved to finish the design of the expansion of the city's airport to provide a longer runway for air traffic.News 12's Max Jensen tells us what this means for the city. The existing runway sits at three thousand six hundred feet. But after the six million dollar plan is complete the runway will be long enough to accommodate larger aircraft.Kathy Bailey says, "The primary reason is the size of planes and number of planes we have coming into Blue Earth."The project has been in the works for several years but with seven Blue Earth companies already using the current set up making the runway longer is attractive to outside business.Bailey says, "We have a number of companies that fly into Blue Earth and their planes because the distance they're traveling are getting larger and larger."With the one thousand foot addition to the north end of the runway the Airport could handle larger jets, which could mean more business for the city. The hope is to nearly double the air traffic and by doing so would make Blue Earth attractive to businesses to set up shop.Bailey says, "Having access to an airport in a community certainly gives a boost to our economic development to capabilities here in town to attract businesses and large jobs."The money for the project will come from several different sources as federal, state and city funding will finance the project. And now that the plan has been approved construction on the addition is slated to begin in 2010.But city officials are confident that with a boost in air traffic new and old businesses will be better off.In Blue Earth, Max Jensen, News 12.
