Next Christmas, there may be a new place in town for your relatives to stay when they come to visit you for the holidays.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more...The River Hills Mall could have a new neighbor. Construction would begin as early as next spring on what would be known as a Hospitality Campus, which would include two new hotels and a restaurant.Paul Vogel says, "The first phase is a 94 room courtyard by Marriott, the second phase is the 82 room extended stay, and those are separate buildings, and the third phase is a separate building that they're targeting for about a six thousand square foot restaurant."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "This is the building site for the future hospitality campus and as you can see, it is extremely close to the River Hills Mall.With the economy being on everyone's mind these days, many people are wondering how this business is going to contribute to our local economy."Paul Vogel says, "I think one of the main reasons why they looked at this site as opposed to some other sites was the close proximity to the mall and the realization that there are people and customers coming to the River Hills Mall market area."One local expert thinks that the hotels would bring more people to the Mankato area, where they would in turn spend more money.Dick Schiming says, "Well, anytime anybody spends any money in Mankato, whether its construction or retail, there is what is known as a multiplier effect.In other words, that dollar by the time it ripples through the community, it creates several other dollars of income.So the fact is, building the hotel and the people that stay in town and spend their money at the hotel, that's going to ripple through the Mankato economy and just make our economy that much bigger."The Mankato City Council will need to give their final approval before the construction can begin, but so far, there isn't much opposition.In Mankato, Jennifer Hudspeth, News 12.
