Curling is not one of the major sports in America but it is becoming more and more popular in Southern Minnesota. The Mankato Curling Club is working to grow the sport in our area. I caught up with some eager students of the game and found out the next generation of curlers is on the way. The sport of curling has a rich tradition in the Key City. Mankato East has a state championship in the sport back in 1977. The Birr Brothers, Kevin and Todd, helped lead team USA to a bronze medal at the World Championships in 2007. And our city has a hosted many qualifying and even national championship events. There is something about curling that is fun for everyone, and Kevin Birr is hoping to continue to pass on the sport he loves, to anyone who is willing to learn it. It looks easy, slide a Rock down the long strip of ice, get a little help from your sweepers, and land your stone in the house to score a point. While it may not be as simple as it looks, learning the sport seems to be as contagious as the fun. There is one aspect of the game however that is the unanimous favorite. It certainly is a sport the whole family can enjoy. Birr says, "Every weekend through the end of December the Mankato Curling Club is holding a free open session from noon to one for anyone who wants to try Curling." There is a small fee but according to all in attendance this weekend, it's well worth the cost of admission. If you would like more information about sport or events at Mankato Curling Club you can go online to www.mankatocurling.org. Here's a look at the rest.
