Immigration Discussion

We didn't hear much about immigration this past election, and that has some business leaders hopeful for reform. Today the Minnesota Chamber Commerce met to discuss how to best get that reform passed into law. News 12's Ryan Gustafson joins us live in the newsroom with more. There were approximately 370 thousand immigrants in Minnesota in 2006, with anywhere from sixty to ninety thousand being illegal or undocumented. And with a new Congress and President soon to take power in Washington, the business community is hoping to make some headway in immigration reform. Stacia Smith says, "Immigration is an issue that a lot of people are afraid of talking about, especially business, they feel that if they talk about it, they got a target on their back and we want to expose that and say that's no, this should be an issue that we can all talk about."Similar meetings like this one have taken place in St. Cloud, Rochester, Worthington and the Twin Cities. As business leaders are trying to figure out the best way to meet their labor demands and improve the economy. John Keller says, "Whether it be immigration or healthcare or social security, we've got to find a middle ground, that sort of leaves the shrill voices on both sides, to one side and says what's best for the United States." According to the Chamber of Commerce, costs for illegal immigrants run near 200 million dollars a year for K-12 education and other costs. But they also estimate that the economic benefit from those same people is around 3 point 8 billion dollars. Live in the newsroom, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
