Teacher Killed In House Fire Remembered

A fire late Friday night in Winthrop sent one man to the hospital, and claimed the life of his wife.Her name was Deb Hanson, she was a teacher at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop High School, and today her students remembered her.News 12's Ryan Gustafson was in Winthrop today, and joins us live in the newsroom.The teacher they called 'Momma' had taught English at G-F-W since 1993. And judging by the words of her colleagues, and the messages her students left, she will be missed.'Your love, your joy, your spirit, your laughter will always fill this room Momma Hanson,' read one of the many notes current and former students left for a teacher respected both by those she taught and those she worked with.GFW Superintendent Steve Malone says, "She was an excellent teacher, she not only had the technical skill in terms of instruction in curriculum and the professional expertise, but she had that 'with-it-ness' She really connected with the kids, she was very popular."The cause of the fire that killed Hanson is still under investigation.Her husband, Doug Hanson was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment.Deb Hanson was 58 years old.We'll have more on this story, on News 12 at TenLive in the newsroom, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
