Deb Hanson taught English at Gibbon Fairfax Winthrop high school since 1993, becoming a student favorite.But a fire at her Winthrop home that sent her husband to the hospital, claimed her life late Friday night.News 12's Ryan Gustafson has more on how this classroom favorite is being remembered.'Your love, your joy, your spirit, your laughter will always fill this room Momma Hanson,'Momma Hanson, the term of endearment her students used, just about sums up what she meant to the school, and its staff.((11.51.57))GFW Superintendent Steve Malone says, "She was an excellent teacher, she not only had the technical skill in terms of instruction in curriculum and the professional expertise, but she had that 'with-it-ness' She really connected with the kids, she was very popular."As you glance around the room, you pick up on the little things that make up a beloved teacher. A teacher who makes you work for your grade. What usually gets you an A in most classes will only get you a B in Mrs. Hanson's.The local newspapers on the wall highlight what's going on in town and who's running for Miss Winthrop or Miss Gibbon.The lesson planner, that won't be used by the one who made it.((11.53.20))Dr. Malone says, "Mrs. Hanson loved to teach. She had an enthusiasm and an excitement that she brought to the classroom. She motivated her students with her positive attitude. She was a real professional and had fun along the way."Crews were called to the Hanson's Winthrop home around 11-30 Friday night. It would take almost 7 hours to put out the blaze.Deb's husband, Doug Hanson was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment for burns and smoke inhalation.Deb Hanson was pronounced dead at the scene.She was 58.In Winthrop, Ryan Gustafson, News 12.
