CBS News Looks Back At 2008

Barack Obama made history and political scandal crept into the news more often than usual this year, but it was the struggling economy and the devastating fallout that dominated the headlines and caused heartache for millions of Americans from Main Street to Wall Street. Drew Levinson looks back at the domestic stories of the year.For many in 2008...home was where the broken heart was--along with the foreclosure sign.The Dow went down, banks and financial institutions went belly up, and millions lost their jobs.The government swooped in with a 700-billion-dollar bailout package.But congress put the brakes on helping Detroit's big three automakers.The faulty economy helped sway voters to elect Barack Obama--the first African American to the White House.And Alaska Governor Sarah Palin jumped on to the national stage....as the first female Republican to run for Vice President.She invigorated her party but her perceived inexperience..proved to be a problem for running mate John McCain.Former first lady, Hillary Clinton went from a Senator running for President to Obama's choice for Secretary of State.They may have made ''Political history'' but the country was stained by ''political scandal.''Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested--allegedly scheming to sell Obama's vacant Senate seat for cash.Self Professed Crime fighter New York Governor Eliot Spitzer--resigned after being caught with a prostitute.Former Presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted he cheated on his cancer-stricken wife.85-year old Alaska Senator Ted Stevens.. fresh off his conviction for accepting illegal gifts ran for an eighth term........he lost.A deadly shooting on the campus of Northern Illinois University brought back memories of the Virginia Tech massacre. A man dressed in black opened fire from the stage of a lecture hall. He killed five and injured 16 before committing suicide.Federal investigators finally figured out who was behind those anthrax laced envelopes back in 2001 that killed five. Bruce Ivins committed suicide before authorities could arrest him.The Weather turned lives upside down.Midwest Floods forced 35-thousand people from their homes and left seven-billion dollars worth of damaged crops in their wake.Tornadoes in the South killed nearly 60.Four Boy Scouts died when a twister tore through their camp in Iowa.Hurricane Ike--leveled much of Galveston and killed more than 80.Hurricane Gustav was no Katrina...but it left millions in New Orleans and the surrounding area in the dark for weeks.High winds in Southern California stoked wildfires for days and destroyed thousands of homes. Pope Benedict made his first trip to the United States where he made a plea for peace and ended by saying "May God Bless America"Drew Levinson, CBS News, New York.
