In Health Watch:There is new incentive for obese women to lose weight.Researchers say the risk of developing ovarian cancer is much higher for ladies over 50 who are overweight.Teri Okita has the details.Obese women are carrying around more than extra pounds.A new study shows they face an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer.Dr. Stephanie Blank says, The results of the study are not surprising; obesity is known to increase the Chances of multiple cancers - it is not surprising to me ovarian cancer is one of those Researchers looking at women who have never taken menopausal hormone replacement therapy found that those who are obese have an almost 80 percent higher risk of ovarian cancer compared to normal weight women.Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest .. the disease killed more than 15-thousand women in the U-S in 2008 according to the National Cancer Institute.For this study researchers at the institute followed almost 95-thousand American women between the ages of 50 and 71.Over the course of seven years they documented about 300-cases of ovarian cancer.Researchers believe obese women may face an elevated risk because their fat cells turn normal hormones into estrogen - and estrogen plays a role in the development of ovarian cancer.While doctors like Stephanie Blank with the NYU Cancer Institute say being thin is no guarantee of preventing ovarian cancer.Dr. Blank says, 'I have patients that are pilates instructors, tri-athletes that get ovarian cancer.'They also agree that obesity spells trouble.. and women should work to manage their weight.Teri Okita, CBS News, Los Angeles.
