On February 17th, full power TV broadcasters will make the switch to digital television.A forum today in Mankato gave TV viewers the chance to make sure they can still watch their favorite shows come February 17th.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more.Do you need to buy an HDTV?How do you get a coupon to buy a converter box?Those questions and more were answered during a DTV awareness program.The session was held at the Blue Earth County Library, where experts explained that the process should go off without any major complications.Nicole Femling says, "I think the transition is going to be pretty smooth, they pretty much have seen this coming so they are prepared in every way."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "With the conversion to DTV just around the corner, many people are finding that they are unprepared.The government is still offering the forty dollar coupons on the converter boxes, but if you haven't signed up for one yet, it may be hard to get your hands on one."Katrina Kleinwachter says, "If you already requested coupons you're fine, but if you go in today and request a coupon you'll be on a waiting list."Being put on the waiting list doesn't guarantee you a coupon.The government has run out of funds for the rebate program.The only way you can be chosen from the list is if someone lets their coupon expire.The government is considering adding more funds toward the program.As the new Congress takes up the issue, many people are wondering if they should buy a new TV altogether... and if they do, does it have to be a high definition television...Nicole says, "You do not need an HDTV, that is not necessary.You can buy any standard definition TV as long as it has a digital tuner in it."Experts say to make sure that your television is set up correctly before the conversion.KEYC will take part in a digital test January 12th, so you can tune in to make sure you won't be disappointed come February.In Mankato, Jennifer Hudspeth, News 12.If you still have questions concerning the conversion you can contact the Federal Communication Commission at 1-888-CALL-FCC.You can also go to our webpage at www.keyc.tv .
