They say that an apple a day will keep the doctor away. One huge apple in Le Center will be doing a lot more than that.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more about how two Minnesota companies are keeping a major league baseball tradition alive. For years, New York Mets fans have enjoyed watching the tradition of a giant apple making an appearance after a home run. With the apple in bad shape, that tradition was in jeopardy...Eric Saretsky says, "Its frame was so rotted that it's now going to sit as like a memorial in our Hall of Fame."But Minnesota Nice is coming to the rescue of Mets Fans... a new apple is almost ready to head to the Big Apple.Fiberglas Fabricators and the company Uni-systems have worked hand in hand to get the perfect design.Mark Silvera says, "It was a very fun project, anytime you get to make a 19 ft diameter apple and watch it shoot in the air in three seconds is a lot of fun."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "This apple is about four times the size of the old apple and it weighs close to 6,000 pounds which means it weighs the same as approximately three full size cars. Now, the project has been a fun one to complete, but it's also been a difficult process."Mark Hagelberger says, "Let's just say that it is a relief that it's altogether. There were a lot of challenges that we had to do in the process of building it."Challenges such as trying to move the enormous apple shell in order to bolt the three different sections together.Their next challenge is shipping the gigantic piece of fruit to the new Citi Field stadium, and everyone has their fingers crossed that fans will be pleased.Eric says, "I think it looks great and I think the fans are going to love it because it's much better than the one we used to have."The long hours and late nights worked in order to finish the project on time have paid off, and those who had a hand in it can't wait to watch the apple's big debut.Mark Hagelberger says, "I think we'll all have goose bumps when we see it go up, knowing that we were a part of that to build it."And when the Mets hold their season opener in April, this crew will watch their hard work bear fruit..In Le Center, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
