Some Republican lawmakers want Minnesota to become the eighth state to require photo identification of voters casting ballots in elections.

Reps. Tom Emmer of Delano and Mary Kiffmeyer of Big Lake say the integrity of Minnesota’s election process will be much improved if all voters are forced to show ID.

Kiffmeyer, a former Minnesota Secretary of State, says voters without photo id could cast a provisional ballot. Their votes would be counted as long as they presented ID within a certain time period.

Under the bill, voters who couldn't afford a photo id would be able to get a state-issued voting ID card for free.

Opponents of the legislation have argued that voter fraud isn't a problem in Minnesota and that the ID requirement could disenfranchise some voters.
