S.T.E.M. Program Helps Students Learn

The Minnesota Department of Education has started a new program to help connect teachers and students with resources in their community.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more about this program and a website that could help make learning difficult subjects much easier.At Mankato West High School, Mr. Zenk's engineering class had a special visitor.Kent Ross is Director of Engineering for a local company; he came in to tell the students about what life is really like in world of technology.Kent Ross says, "When you're in high school and you're looking 'gee what do I want to do in my future' and it's good to get exposed to what people are like in the industry."Ross' visit was made possible by a new program just launched today.Get STEM, a website focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math, connects schools to resources and businesses in the community.Mr. Zenks says the process is as easy as logging on to his computer."It's a good connection. You're busy sometimes in education where this way you can take five minutes, put a request on the website and let the industry get back a hold of you and then make the connection through the website."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "The GetStem website offers more than just classroom speakers; it can also help teachers find equipment, tools or even funding for a fieldtrips.The good news is that while schools may not be aware of the new site, it is available to every school in the state."Mark Zenk says.
