Distribution Center Coming To Winthrop

Many fans of dairy products are familiar with the Land O' Lakes brand. Many fans of dairy products are familiar with the Land O' Lakes brand. The company is also a regional cooperative, owning other companies. News 12's Erick Lind found out that one of those branches will soon bring a new opportunity to Winthrop. Winthrop Mayor Dave Trebelhorn says, "It's great news for the city of Winthrop. We're expanding in times that are tough around the state...world. Yes it's great news to have expansion in a rural community." Winthrop Mayor Dave Trebelhorn has reason to be excited. His city has been looking to add an industrial park... a plan that could get a big boost after landing a nearly two-acre regional distribution center for Winfield Solution. The crop protection and seed company chose Winthrop because of the highways and railway. The community had one more feature that separated them from their competitors. United Farming Cooperative general manager Jeff Nielsen says, "They were also interested in partnering with a local cooperative, so they could not only do wholesale distribution but also get directly to the producers who get the product." United Farming Cooperative has existed since 1915, most recently adding a fertilizer plant. Partnering with this new center will be big for their future. Jeff Nielsen says, "Most exciting part is really they own it. This is owned by those farmers, including this distribution center which is owned by our regional cooperative in partnership with us. It really completes that project and should really provide great service for many years to come." Not only is the distribution center good for members of the United Farmers Cooperative, but when the new facility is complete on this piece of ground, the entire city could benefit by seeing new visitors come to town. Mayor Trebelhorn adds, "This will be like a central/southern Minnesota regional distribution center, so they will be coming from all over the area, a big area to get some of their chemical supplies for the farmers' inputs."The center will create 16 new jobs as well, not to mention the construction and design companies involved. The group and city look to spend 3 1/2 million dollars for the project. In Winthrop, Erick Lind, News 12.
