The Maple River school district is like most right now, facing tough tasks when trying to balance its budget. One of the options they're looking at is closing Maple River West Middle School in Amboy,But as News 12's Erick Lind tells us residents aren't ready to let that happen.Kelly Reuter has lived in Amboy all of her life.In fact so have most of her ancestors.Eight generations to be exact. She graduated in 1973 from what was Amboy-Good Thunder High School. The school has since become part of the Maple River school district as a middle school. With current economic problems in the school district, the only school she ever knew may be closed completely. That doesn't sit well with many of the residents of the town that feel they are getting a raw deal.Kelly Reuter says, "It's always been felt that Mapleton eventually wants everything over there because that's where the high school is, but that' snot necessary. All four towns are a part of it, and they should remain a part of it."The school district knows it is a tough reality to face, but they may have to close the school if they want to be able to continue to provide the programs they currently do.Maple River Superintendent Willis Schoeb says, "I can understand the emotional concerns that the Amboy people have, but also you have to consider the realistic concerns the other 3 communities have regarding the financial status of the school district."It doesn't matter what generation you are from either. Those that grew up going to the school in Amboy feel closing the school should never be an option."They want to cut everything out here, and I just feel that it's a real detriment to the town not to have a school facility here."Supporters like Verla will be able to voice their opinions tonight at Maple River high school. They hope that their message will get through and the district will save their school. In Amboy, Erick Lind, News.
