A teacher with the Sleepy Eye school district is charged with criminal sexual conduct after an alleged relationship with a 16-year-old student. 47 year old Calvin Clifford Collum was arrested yesterday after a search of his home in New Ulm. News 12's Ryan Gustafson is live in the newsroom with more. According to the New Ulm and Sleepy Eye Police Departments, Collum was arrested for the crime on Tuesday, after a search warrant was executed at the school, and another at Collum's home in New Ulm. Police say the investigation began after classmates noticed Collum and the student spending a significant amount of time together. Collum was suspended from the Sleepy Eye school district on Friday pending an investigation. But word spread to the Sleepy Eye Police Department, who then contacted the New Ulm Police Department. Senior Investigator David Borchert says, "From that point on, we followed up on it and found there was in fact something and followed up with our own leads from there."The student allegedly admitted to having sex with Collum at his house within the past two weeks, And according to classmates, Columm and the student had plans to move to Connecticut and raise a family. The Sleepy Eye School District says that they will continue with their investigation, as per protocol of the Minnesota Department of Education. Supt. Dockter says, "Sleepy Eye schools will investigate all allegations and will do the investigation as quickly as possible and keep the student's privacy in mind."Collum was released on bail today.
