DULUTH, MINN. (AP) _ An ice storm snapped trees and power lines along the North Shore, leaving thousands of people in the dark Tuesday from rural Two Harbors to Grand Portage.
In some areas, the trees were weighted down by an inch or more of ice.
As of Tuesday afternoon, power had been restored to most Knife River, Two Harbors and Silver Bay residents, but it was still dark in Beaver Bay and rural areas.
Lake County’s Cooperative Light and Power said nearly half of its 5,600 customers may have lost electricity at some point.
Spokeswoman Sarah Cron says most main lines should be restored by the weekend.
The storm forced Grand Marais-based Community radio station WTIP-FM off the air due to icing on its antenna.
Customers at the Finland Cooperative General Store shopped in the dark and paid in cash.
The National Weather Service said more rain was expected overnight and could cause additional ice buildup.
