Locally Brown, Watonwan, and Martin Counties are in a red flag warning...That means conditions are ripe for wildfires.... AND That is forcing law enforcement to make some changes. News 12's Erick Lind explains. Dion, Nicole, the Watonwan County Sheriff's Department is facing many of the same problems. With the national weather service issuing a Red Flag Warning for counties west of Mankato. That means people ready to burn will have to put it on hold for now. Watonwan County Sheriff Gary Menssen says, "There shouldn't be anybody burning because if they do they were supposed to call in prior to burning that day, so we're informing people not to burn at that point." The Red Flag Warning is caused by low humidity with strong winds. Wildfire conditions are only going to get more dangerous with forecasted wind speeds of 20 to 25 miles per hour. Sheriff Menssen says this type of warning is more commonly seen in the fall when crops dry out. He says his Deputies will make sure fires are put out during red flag periods. Madelia Fire Chief Vince Forstner says with or without the warning people need to be careful. His department has already battled a couple of permitted fires that have got out of control. Chief Forstner says, "They weren't serious thankfully, but you just got to keep that in mind you know, where is the wind blowing compared to stuff you really wouldn't want to see burned up." department is looking forward to wetter weather in the future forecast, but until that happens the Red Flags will have to stay up. In Watonwan County, Erick Lind, News 12. LeSueur County issued a burn restriction today. It temporarily suspends all burn permits issued by the county. Recreational fires smaller than three feet in diameter will still be accepted, although the Sheriff's Department says to use common sense when building one. If you have any questions call the department at 507-357-4440.
