Good evening I'm Dion Cheney.And I'm Nicole Winters, thanks for joining us.J-W-P school district closed Pemberton Elementary in 1995.Due to budget problems, Waldorf Middle School may now be on the chopping block.As News 12's Erick Lind reports, some officials are floating another option to save expenses...Janesville Waldorf Pemberton needs to make cuts for the upcoming school year.One answer the school board is looking at is a 4-day school week...A change that supporters admit does have one downside...JWP school board member Charlie Quast says, "The only negative thing of going to the 4-day week is the parents with the younger children and both parents working, and they're going to have to find a place for them."However, Superintendent Tami Sens says there is an upside to the longer school days.JWP Superintendent Tami Sens says, "There can be some positives of being in a 4-day week in having longer classes in science and math allowing students more time to work on problems and some hands on experiences."If the 4-day school week doesn't happen the district is looking at closing the middle school in Waldorf...Something the school and the town don't want to see happen.Sens adds, "Without taking away programs for kids, options for kids, and opportunities for kids, those would be the two biggest options as far as getting over the $200,000 mark."Another problem the district could face would be more students leaving if the newly remodeled Waldorf school closes.Quast believes not only would they retain students with a 4-day week... he believes open enrollment could lure some students back and some in from outside the district.Quast adds, "If you're going to try to attract students back to a small district you have to do something unique, and I think this is a unique path to look at."At around five-thousand dollars a head that could make up some money for the district as well.Erick Lind, News 12.The school board is inviting everyone from all of the communities to attend a study session Monday night at 7 o'clock in Waldorf.
