Charges Filed Against Gaylord Police Chief

Good evening, I'm Dion Cheney. And I'm Nicole Winters, thanks for joining us.Gaylord Police Chief Dale Roiger makes his first appearance in court today facing charges that he used a recording device to spy on city council members in July of 2007.News 12's Bryan Piatt was in the courtroom today and joins us live in the Newsroom.Nicole-Dion,Roiger faces two gross misdemeanor charges of intercepting communications and misconduct by a public official.According to court documents, Roiger is accused of having a Gaylord Police officer hide a tape recorder in the former Chamber of Commerce Office on July 25th, 2007.Prosecutors say Roiger was concerned city council members were meeting illegally to discuss eliminating the Gaylord Police Department and contracting with the Sibley County Sheriffs Department.Court documents indicate Roiger told a former city council member he tried bugging the room but got nothing from it.He later told a Carver County Investigator he made that comment only to see how far it would go.Neither the prosecutor or Roiger's attorney would comment, but some Gaylord residents say the chief may have had reason to do what he did.Eileen Busse says, "I like him as a person. I like him as the cop or the chief of police. To me he's a good person. I'm just kind of surprised but he probably had just cause for what he was doing."Roiger is facing a maximum penalty of 2 years in prison and a 6 thousand dollar fine. The City of Gaylord was planning on meeting tonight to decide Roigers future with the police department but that meeting has been moved until next Tuesday at 6 o'clock.Roiger makes his next appearance in court on June 8th.Live in the Newsroom, Bryan Piatt News 12.
