GFW Looking To Adopt All-Day Kindergarten

As the McLeod west school district dissolves, enrollment in neighboring Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop is expected to rise....As News 12's Max Jensen explains, that could mean the GFW district could adopt all-day kindergarten. Max Jensen says, "Starting next fall Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop kindergarten classes will move to all day every day. It's something that has been in the works for quite some time now." Dr. Steve Malone says, "We're just excited about the opportunity, we've had parents requesting all day everyday kindergarten and been planning for it for several years, things just came together that we're able to roll it out this fall." The move from all day every other day will cost over 130 thousand dollars...An increase in enrollment from the Mc Leod West School District and sales from post-employment benefits bonds sold have paved the way for the switch to all day classes. Dr. Malone says, "We're really fortunate that the finances allowed us to provide this program to the kids this year." The transition from two or three days to five days won't have that significant of an effect on the way kindergarten is run at the school level. Ralph Fairchild says, "There are always people who wonder when you change what you're going to do and it's going to be different than what they're use too. For the most part the vast majorities are looking forward to this as an option for their children." And for Lola Rieke whose been teaching kindergarten for 22 years.... she is looking forward to the all day schedule. Lola Rieke says, "All the curriculum, now days, are geared towards all day everyday so it will be a benefit to the children to be coming here everyday." The shift to all day kindergarten will start at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year. In Gibbon, Max Jensen, News 12.
