Fined For Wearing A Hat; Money Going To Good Cause

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life is held around the state at many different times during the year.Waseca's is July 24th and 25th this year, but they're getting an early start.News 12's Erick Lind tells us how they capped it off.Waseca's Roundbank was a site to behold today as employees donned their favorite headwear for a good cause...The caps marked the start of the Relay for Life fundraising campaign.A cause the bank has supported for three years.Waseca Relay for Life Chair Pam Schaper says, "Initially Roundbank started as a sponsor for just the survivor dinner, and then they stepped up last year and became a corporate sponsor, and then this year they are our premiere corporate sponsor."Relay for Life Chair Pam Schaper is looking to get a younger crowd involved with her Hat's Off to Relay. And while hats are not normally allowed in schools... an exception was made to help the kids learn about the cause after Mayor Roy Srp issued a proclamation.Waseca Junior Briee Mercier says, "I think not many people would know about it, know how to give money to it, so I think it just helps get it out there."Roundbank isn't alone in their efforts. School districts around Waseca County chipped in as well seeing students wear their hats for more than just style.Waseca High School assistant principal John Huttemier says, "the hats were a badge of honor for people who have been suffering through chemotherapy and battling cancer."One of those battling is Waseca teacher Ted Hammond. He advises the DECA club in charge of selling the stickers for the right to wear the hats. Some bought the stickers even if they forgot their hats at home.Ted Hammond says, "The Relay for Life came up with the idea, but we just piggybacked on it, and when I got cancer it was more personal to me and personal to the students too, so it just mushroomed from there."With three teams from the school and three more from the bank, they should end up with a sizable contribution when the Relay arrives in July.In Waseca, Erick Lind, News 12.
