Residents Speak Out Against Proposed Bridge Project

The City of Waterville is proposing a project that would add a new bridge, a new trail and an estimated 40 thousand dollar dip into the city's general fund. But as News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth explains the project is not without opposition.Jim Hanks has lived in Waterville for 37 years...Jim says, "This is where the entire family calls home."But a proposal to build a pedestrian bridge across the Cannon River and to add a trail that would come right up to his property line... leaves him less than thrilled.Jim Hanks says, "It's kind of an invasion of our privacy is one way to look at it."Jim along with many other residents say that the trail would be pointless because the scenery would consist of backyards, and the trail would only be a block long.Jim says, "If we look at some of the other areas around here, you can see that these backyards are far from attractive."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "Many residents are already calling the proposed project... a bridge that leads to nowhere, many are saying they aren't willing to spend tax dollars on a project they don't want."Before they spend anymore tax dollars we would like them to just say, hey we see that the citizens don't want this, it's something that is not going to be economic to the citizens so we just want them to stop."Although Waterville would be receiving a 30,000 dollar grant from the DNR, the project could cost the city close to 40,000 dollars.A petition to stop the project has already gained 400 signatures and will be presented at the city council meeting tonight.A meeting where Jim Hanks hopes to have his voice heard.Jim says, "Although I don't campaign for or against things, there's been a few times in my life when I do take a stand and this will be one of them."In Waterville, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.The City Administrator responded by email that the purpose of the project is to provide a connection between Sakatah Singing Hills Trail and the city beach, saying it would bring economic development to the community. Two City Council Members declined to discuss the issue.
