Waterville City Council Tables Bridge Proposal

Thanks for joining us.A proposal by the City of Waterville would place a pedestrian bridge over Cannon River. That bridge, along with a connecting trail, would run the city about forty thousand dollars. But in light of some fairly strong community opposition, the city council has tabled that proposal until next month. In an effort to provide a connection between the Sakatah Singing Hills Trail and the city beach, the city of Waterville wants to place a pedestrian bridge over the Cannon River, and build their own trail toward the state trail. But those who would lose property to the project don't think it's a very good idea.Jim says, "If we look at some of the other areas around here, you can see that these backyards are far from attractive."Jennifer Grobe says, "Before they spend anymore tax dollars we would like them to just say, hey we see that the citizens don't want this, it's something that is not going to be economic to the citizens so we just want them to stop."That push included a petition with more than 400 signatures that the opposition gave to the Waterville City Council at tonight's meeting. The board accepted the petition, and has now decided to seek out more public opinion concerning the project.Mayor Allen Benson says, "I don't necessarily agree with your statements but I do really appreciate the input. What I am going to do is ask the city counsel, on all issues regarding the bridge, essentially table all the issues until next month."A small victory for now, but one those against the bridge will definitely take.Jim says, "Although I don't campaign for or against things, there's been a few times in my life when I do take a stand and this will be one of them."In Waterville, Ryan Gustafson News 12.
