Mankato school officials break ground on the district's first new elementary school since 1964.Folks gathered on Heron Drive this morning for the groundbreaking of a new school building.Superintendent Ed Waltman says in his 35 years, he's overseen the building of Dakota Meadows Middle School, the conversion of Eagle Lake into a full elementary, and several renovations to older buildings. He says his last ground breaking as superintendent is a big one for the city.Waltman says, "We're one of the few school districts that have 3 buildings built in the 1920s. They've served us well, but it's good to build a new school that will meet the educational needs for future generation in this community for many years to come."The new elementary school still has yet to be named. The district is leaving that up to the public.Just go to the Mankato Public School's website, and vote on one of eleven choices. It's on our Featured Links.
