Judge: Sleepy Eye Teen Must Get Medical Treatment for Cancer

But first...To the case of a Sleepy Eye teen's medical treatment...Thanks for joining us.I'm Rosemary Shultz.A judge has ruled 13 year old Daniel Hauser must undergo chemotherapy.News 12's Bryan Piatt is in the newsroom with the latest.Rosemary, Brown County Judge John Rodenberg released the 60 page ruling this morning.13 year old Daniel Hauser has Hodgkin's Lymphoma... a treatable form of cancer. However, doctors say without chemotherapy, the boy will likely die.At issue is whether the boy has the right to treat that cancer with alternative methods... methods that are endorsed by a group claiming to be Native American. The judge rejected that argument, stating neither Daniel nor his parents are Native American. He also ruled Daniel is not able to understand the illness or the medical treatments. The judge says Daniel is in need of child protection services... but he will remain in his parents' custody. The matter will be back in Brown County Court Tuesday to discuss things with the family. The judge has ordered the Hauser's must have updated chest x - rays of the boy, and have an oncologist selected before that hearing.Of course, we'll have much more on this story tonight on News 12 at Six.Live in the Newsroom: Bryan Piatt, News 12.
