State Denies Henderson Charter School Application

The LeSueur-Henderson school district is one of many in pursuit of a charter school. The district wanted to open next fall, but the state denied the application. News 12's Erick Lind has the details. Faith Sohns and Kathy Leary are two of five fulltime teachers at Hilltop Elementary in Henderson. In February they started the charge to change the facility to a charter school. After several meetings with parents, teachers, and an interm chartering board, the district submitted a 90-page proposal to the state education department May 1st. Last Friday, LeSueur-Henderson received an e-mail denying its proposal. Leary says, "We put a lot of time and effort into the process and we're disappointed, but we'd like to move ahead." Superintendent Dave Johnson says the education department cited a lack of recruiting details and how the school would deal with at risk students. The major problem however, was not showing a need for the charter school. Johnson says, "Apparently we need to do a better job of writing the grant and flushing out the innovative part of it and how this would be different than what we have right now." Although the charter school application was denied the first time, teachers here at Hilltop Elementary are confident that it will get done down the road. Sohns says, "I believe we will be a charter school, and with everyone's support, I don't know how it would fail." Leary says, "We're going to meet with our interm board and see what we can do to make the proposal even better." The school gets another shot if they can get a revised proposal in by July 7th. If accepted the school would still have to wait for the 2010-2011 school year, but that would give more funds and time to work on start-up. In Henderson, Erick Lind, News 12.
