Redwood County Employee, Morgan Fire Chief Faces Felony Theft Charges

A Redwood County employee, working as the fire chief in the small town of Morgan is facing felony charges.40 - year - old Craig Huiras stands accused of stealing hundreds of gallons of gas from the county...News 12's Carly Aplin was in Morgan today and spoke to the police chief who arrested the fire chief.Residents I spoke to in Morgan today say they're surprised to find out their fire chief is facing a felony count of embezzlement of public funds...Robert Fischer is the mayor of Morgan; he's also the police chief who arrested Huiras... and believes if the fire chief broke the law he should be punished.Mayor Robert Fischer says, "What he does, he's going to have to deal with and have to pay the price."According to the criminal complaint ...while working as a county employee ...Huiras stole 391 gallons of gas, totaling nearly eight hundred dollars, from the Redwood County Highway Department's Morgan Substation Shop.During the investigation a deputy with the Redwood County Sheriff's Department installed a camera system in the shop.Authorities say it captured video of the gasoline thefts between February and May of this year.Still, Fischer says he's supporting the fire chief.Robert Fischer says, "We had a conversation last night... he asked me, we had a council meeting Wednesday night and he asked me if we wanted to bring it up the matter at the city council and I said no..."Fischer says Huiras will remain the acting fire chief pending the outcome of the trial...Huiras told him if he's convicted he'll resign from his post.Robert Fischer says, "No matter what happens, yeah we'll still be supportive of him... he's been a fairly decent person all his life and sometimes people make mistakes."Huiras is facing up to five years in jail and a 10 thousand dollar fine...He's scheduled to appear in court on June 15th for an omnibus hearing.Carly Aplin, News 12.
