AmeriCorps Volunteers Give Area Library a Facelift

Area Members of AmeriCorps dedicated their day to service.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more about how the group spent their time cleaning up a vital building in Sherburn.AmeriCorps members from all across Southern Minnesota came to town to help a friend.Fellow member Becky Tish works at the Sherburn library, a building in need of a little t-l-c.Becky Tish says, "It's an older building, funds are limited, we rent the space, and it just needed an update..."It was an update AmeriCorps friends were happy to help with.They hope a fresh coat of new yellow paint will make the library a popular place to be.Jenny Brown says, "I'm sure she's really excited to have new paint on the walls, and just bring a little color and life in, so that the kids in this community can have an awesome place to gather and read books, and learn and really grow."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "Giving the library a facelift is just one way AmeriCorps gives back, this project is part of their LEAP initiative.They say that learning early achieves potential."Jenny says, "We work with 0 to 5 year olds, and we have the time of our lives, it's the coolest position in the world.That's why this program is important, because we are there for them, we are champions for the early childhood movement."It's a movement Becky Tish hopes will bring more children in to read books...books in a much brighter library.Becky says, "It's just huge because it's really important to keep the small branch libraries going and if their attractive and appealing, then people are going to want to come in."People coming in to see a brand new makeover.In Sherburn, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.The AmeriCorps Leap Program is sponsored by the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation.
