Area Businesses Helping To Save Mankato Fireworks

Good evening, I'm Dion Cheney. And I'm Nicole Winters. Thanks for joining us.There will be fireworks after all for this year's 4th of July. And it appears like just about everyone has been chipping in.News 12's Ryan Gustafson has the story."What's the 4th of July without fireworks?"A fundraising venture spearheaded by Radio Mankato, appears to have saved the fireworks display, at least for this year.So far, they have raised around 22 thousand dollars, and are close to meeting their goal. And help has been seen from numerous area businesses.Michelle Welckle says, "For every new line of service now through the 4th of July, we're donating $30 to the Red Hot and Boom Fireworks in Mankato."Applebee's also got in on the act as well, donating 15 percent from today's sales toward the project.Larson Allen, Mankato Surgery Center, and Ferris Johnson also gave six grand for the fireworks. And that came in handy, especially when Radio Mankato realized it cost a lot more to put on the show than they originally thought.Jo Guck Bailey says, "Yeah, it costs $15,000 just to do the fireworks. But there's lots of other expenses that go into it, including liability insurance, security, and we even discovered yesterday that you need things like port-a-potties that need to be handled."Jo Guck Bailey says, "So we decided that we wanted to do some fundraising, and see if people wanted to give. And we found that - oh yeah, they want their fireworks, and they've been giving and giving and giving.""So it appears things will go on as normal here at Blakeslee Stadium. And that's a good thing, because if this is all we had for the 4th of July... well, let's just say that's no way to celebrate the birth of our nation. In Mankato, Ryan Gustafson, News 12."
