Construction kicked-off today...as residents of St. Peter gathered to watch the official shovels break ground, marking the start of the summer long design-build project on highway 169. The main stretch of road through downtown will be detoured and News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more about how those changes will affect residents who will see a lot more traffic in front of their houses. Highway 169 in St. Peter won't close until next Monday... but the city is already celebrating... Celebrating the 17 million dollar project paid for by stimulus money. It has many officials hoping the construction will bring new life into the city...Jim Swanson says, "Main Street itself is something that's needed work for a long time and we're so happy to be able to put these funds here and do it." Jennifer Hudspeth says, "While many are excited for the construction to start, others are a little more apprehensive." Eileen Enderle says, "Traffic is not my thing... But it's something she will have to live with the next few months, she and her husband just moved into a house right along the path of the detour. Peace and quiet may no longer be much of an option...Eileen says, "Hopefully it's not going to be too hectic..."The detour will be about a mile long running north on Front Street and south on Washington Ave...Eileen Enderle's street will turn into a one-way, and it's a change she doesn't mind. Eileen says, "That wouldn't bother me at all to live on a one way street...so that's not bad at all." Representative Terry Morrow is also trying to look on the bright side...the detour will run in front of his house too. Terry Morrow says, "This is a project that we've been waiting for for decades, to go 5 months with a detour is nothing."He and others are counting on the detour to be a small inconvenience with a big payback." Eileen says, "I'm hoping that whatever they're doing, it's going to benefit the town and whatever we do have to go through, it's going to actually go smooth and come out positive in the long run." A positive approach to a long term investment. In St. Peter, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
