Mankato Man Sentenced For Sexual Assault

Good evening and thanks for joining us, I'm Betsy Gessell.A Mankato man originally accused of six felony counts for allegedly sexually assaulting a female victim while holding a knife reaches a plea deal on just one of those felony counts. Now, his victim is speaking out... saying the deal the county reached with her attacker is quote "a joke"...Fox Mankato's Carly Aplin reports. For one Mankato woman ... the night of December 29, 2008 is a nightmare she'll never forget..."The neighbors heard me screaming and chose not to call the police."That's the night she says she was raped and violently attacked by her then boyfriend, 38 - year - old Thomas Zuehlke."I survived... first of all I survived."Zuehlke was charged with six violent felony counts... facing a maximum of 115 years behind bars... But, today in accordance with a plea deal he reached with Blue Earth County, Zuehlke is guilty of domestic assault by strangulation and sentenced to just 32 months... only 21 of which he will spend in prison."I was completely confident he would get what he deserved, that he would get a reasonable sentence out of this... but as it stands he'll be out in less than two years."Zuehlke's victim didn't want to go on camera, but says today in court she felt like a victim all over again..."There was really no difference in the emotion I was feeling in that courtroom than I did in the interview room at the police station six months before."She says she didn't feel like she had any input in the plea agreement ... and that the Blue Earth County attorney's office never even informed her one had been reached."I got the information roughly five minutes before the pretrial hearing and that information came from the defense..."Carly Aplin says, "Both the defense and prosecution say they feel like justice was served today... and that one felony count and just under two years behind bars is satisfactory."Carrie Leone says, "He agreed to a sentence that was significantly higher than a sentence that would have been called for the guidelines... He accepted that, so I would say yes, it is a fair resolution."Pat McDermott says, "This is a felony - level conviction that puts a man in prison... so yes, I believe it's a good resolution."But, Zuehlke's victim says for her there is no resolution..."This isn't something that's over after today... I'm going to be dealing with this for a long time."And she says when he's released from jail in a year and 8 months... she'll be reliving the nightmare of December 29th all over again...In Mankato, Carly Aplin, the Fox Mankato News at Nine.
