Controversy is brewing in Faribault County over a memorial dedicated to Josh Johnson who was killed two years ago when he lost control of his pickup truck on County State Aid Highway 6.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth spoke with Josh's family who are on a mission to keep his memory alive.It's been two years, but Craig Johnson still feels the pain of losing a child...Craig Johnson says, "You'll never heal..."But friends and family of Josh Johnson are trying to cope.Since his death they have enjoyed visiting a memorial placed at the site of the accident.Craig says, "We put that out a day or two later, there's crosses and plaques and flowers...Pieces that symbolize Josh's life...But a letter Johnson received in the mail could change all that.Craig says, "When that happened, it just broke my heart again, brought back all those old feelings.The letter, sent by Faribault County engineer John McDonald claimed the memorial created a hazard to the traveling public and should be removed.Craig says, "That's a very lightly traveled road, and it's down at the bottom of the ditch, so I don't see where it's going to hazard anybody."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "The Johnson family says the memorial does more good than harm, serving as a reminder warning motorists to be careful."Craig says, "If it makes one person slow down going through the curves, it's doing it's job."Rules by the Minnesota Department of Transportation say the memorial can't interfere with routine maintenance, impact the free flow of traffic, and it must meet certain safety criteria.Johnson says the memorial doesn't interfere and he's not willing to give up the fight... of keeping his son's memorial alive.Craig says, "You cannot describe losing a child, but you can fight for him yet..."A father that says he will continue to protect the memory of his son.In Faribault County, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.County Engineer John McDonald was unavailable for comment.
