A tragic Fourth of July weekend for a Redwood Falls family...A baby is killed and his mother injured after a van backed over their tent at a campground in Renville County on Sunday. Fox Mankato's Carly Aplin has more...Carly Aplin says, "For one family what should have been a peaceful end to the Fourth of July weekend turned into tragedy when an infant and mother were run over by a van while they lay right here in their tent..."Doug Pomplum says, "It's a senseless thing that happened, there's no reason for this person to be driving that van at the time."Authorities say 31 - year - old Nicole Prechel hit the gas instead of the brake while attempting to back a van into a parking area at the Beaver Falls Campground near Morton...A mistake that killed four - month - old Wyatt Sander and wounded his mother 21 - year - old Sheena Hinshaw while they lay resting in their tent.Doug Pomplum says, "There's just no good end to it... It's going to be tragic on both sides."Today campers say they're reminded that tragedies like this can occur if people aren't careful...Ricky Mendoza "We're all here and just a two-month old, and it really kind of hits home when something like this happens. Especially when it comes to kids."Tire tracks from the van are still visible where Prechel backed into the tent... and a tiny cross marks the place where Wyatt was killed.Renville County Chief Deputy Doug Pomplum says this is one of the biggest tragedies he's seen in a long time... and that the Beaver Falls Campground is usually a very family oriented and quiet area during the holiday weekend.Doug Pomplum says, "It hits home with everybody because you know campgrounds are used quite a bit and things like this shouldn't happen but they do..."In Renville County, Carly Aplin, the Fox Mankato News at Nine.Wyatt's mother, Sheena Hinshaw is in stable condition.Prechel, is being held on charges of Criminal Vehicular Homicide, third degree DWI, and driving with a suspended license.She is set to appear in court at 11 A - M on Wednesday.
