Foreclosures rose15 percent nationally in the first half of 2009 compared to 2008...But, Blue Earth County says the number of foreclosures in our area seem to be defying the odds.Fox Mankato's Carly Aplin examines the numbers in our area and tells us how area programs are helping people stay in their homes.Carly Aplin says, "Nationwide there may be a rise in foreclosures, but here in Mankato several programs are keeping those numbers down."Julie Zachariason says, "An appointment might entail simple question and answers because the home owner has questions and doesn't know where to go... the counseling appointments may involve doing a budget to take a look at cash flow."Foreclosure numbers in the Mankato community are actually declining...In the first part of 2008, Blue Earth County had 78 foreclosures... but from January to June of this year the number of foreclosures dropped to 67.That's a 14 percent decrease and a major difference than the 15 percent increase reported nationally. But, Financial Counselor, Julie Zachariason says that doesn't mean foreclosures aren't an issue in our area.Julie Zacharieason says, "Foreclosure affects not just the person going through it or the family but the community and neighborhoods and the property tax base and the businesses."Julie works for Lutheran Social Service which offers budget planning and housing counseling and other services at no cost so people understand their options before or after foreclosure. She says providing that information can help people going through a tough time.Julie Zachariason says, "People are generally very stressed out and they're not quite sure where to go or what they can do and everybody that crosses our door or is on that phone clearly wants to make a difference and make an informed decision."An informed decision that could keep more people in our community in their homes. In Mankato, Carly Aplin, the Fox Mankato News at Nine.
