Foreclosures rose15 percent nationwide in the first half of 2009 compared to 2008...But, Blue Earth County says the number of foreclosures in our area seems to be defying the odds.Foreclosure numbers in the Mankato community are actually declining...In the first part of 2008, Blue Earth County had 78 foreclosures... but from January to June of this year that number dropped to 67.That's a 14 percent decrease and a major difference from the 15 percent increase reported nationally.But, Financial Counselor, Julie Zachariason says that doesn't mean foreclosures aren't an issue in our area.Julie Zacharieason says, "Foreclosure affects not just the person going through it or the family but the community and neighborhoods and the property tax base and the businesses that are in that community, foreclosure has a far reaching impact."Lutheran Social Service offers budget planning and housing counseling to people facing foreclosures at no cost.She says providing that information can help people understand their options during a tough time.
