H1N1 Vaccine Begins Trials On Children

The government is moving ahead with plans to start h-one-n-one swine flu vaccinations in October.Tests on adults started a few weeks ago around the country.Now -- children -- the group most vulnerable to the virus -- are getting their first test shots.Fox's Jonathan Serrie has more.EMORY UNIVERSITY IS ONE OF SEVERAL SITES AROUND THE COUNTRY TESTING AN EXPERIMENTAL H1N1 VACCINE ON CHILDREN.THE GOAL HERE IS TO LEARN WHETHER DOCTORS CAN GIVE THIS VACCINE ALONG WITH THE SEASONAL FLU SHOT... AND STILL PRODUCE THE SAME IMMUNE RESPONSE.OTHER LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY ARE FIGURING OUT THE PROPER DOSAGE.MULLIGAN says: "Children are infected more often and have more serious consequences than our healthy adults. // Children are often the main spreaders of the virus in communities."RESEARCHERS ARE CONFIDANT THE TEST SHOTS ARE SAFE FOR CHILDREN.THE VACCINE IS MADE BY THE SAME COMPANIES USING THE SAME PROCESSES AS THE SEASONAL FLU VACCINE.THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH GAVE THE PEDIATRIC STUDY THE GREEN LIGHT AFTER WEEKS OF ADULT TRIALS RAISED NO RED FLAGS WHEN IT CAME TO SAFETY.KEYSERLING says: "All children are among the first tier group that the government has recommended should receive immunization. This is actually the first year all children are recommended to get the seasonal flu vaccine. So it's going to be a busy year for parents and a busy year for pediatricians."A SIMILAR VIRUS CIRCULATED THE U-S BETWEEN 19-18 AND THE LATE 1950S.PEOPLE BORN AFTER THAT -- PARTICULARLY CHILDREN -- HAVE HAD NO EXPOSURE TO A VIRUS LIKE THIS, PUTTING THEM AT GREATER RISK TO TWO-THOUSAND-NINE H-ONE-N-ONE.STRUDWICK says: '"There's children in school getting sick already. And if my children are vaccinated it means, hopefully, that they won't get sick. But it also means that they won't pass it along to somebody else who may have a lower immune system."SERRIE SU: "The goal of the federal health officials is to have a voluntary mass vaccination program in place by mid-October.
