Animal Rights Group Accuses Hatchery Of Cruelty To Animals

An animal rights group is accusing an Iowa hatchery of grinding up live male chicks.A member of the group worked undercover at the plant and brought back video of the alleged abuse.News 12's Bryan Piatt has more.We want to warn you: the video you're about to see may be unsettling to some viewers.For a two week span this May and June a member of the Chicago Based group 'Mercy for Animals' worked undercover at Hy-Line North America in Spencer and captured this video.It shows workers sorting through a conveyor belt of chicks then throwing them alive into a grinder.The video has many people in the city of Spencer concerned.Margaret Molitor says, "It kind of takes you by surprise. I hate to see any human being or animal suffer. "Jane Shuttleworth says, says, "I think if people knew what was going on they would change their food choices. "Bryan Piatt says, "Most people we talked to today are disturbed by the video but manty say what was caught on camera here at Hy-Line is common practice and there isn't necessarily an alternative to killing the unwanted chicks."Jane Shuttleworth says, " If they aren't breaking the rules then they shouldn't be punished but the rules should changed."No one with Hy-Line North America would speak to us on camera today but they did issue this statement.They say the video appears to show an inappropriate action and violation of their animal welfare policies and that they have initiated an immediate investigation of the entire situation.They say if they do find a violation, the employee or employees involved will be disciplined per company policy, up to and including termination.They go on to say that Instantaneous euthanasia by maceration is specifically supported by the organizations listed.Hy-Line says they expect their investigation to be completed sometime this week.In Spencer, Bryan Piatt, News 12.
