MNSCU Bonuses Causes Controversy

MnSCU is feeling a bit of controversy... as they're set to hand out bonuses to their Presidents. They say bonuses hold the officials accountable ... but others say the money should be going elsewhere.News 12's Bryan Piatt reports. As water flows on the campus of MSU.Money is about to flow into the hands of presidents in the MnSCU system.Melinda Voss says, "Each president is eligible for a performance incentive ranging from 3 thousand to five thousand dollars if they achieve measurable results in 2008 to 2009."Bryan Piatt says, "MnSCU says they have received some criticism because of these bonuses. Representative Tony Cornish says people should not be getting more money at a time like this."Tony Cornish says, "It's not a really popular thing right now. There are people getting laid off and people asked to take furloughs or take zero-zero and here we are getting a raise. I just don't think it's right."MnSCU says these bonuses were negotiated over a year ago before the economy went south. They say none of the presidents received an increase in their base salary last year and having the option of a performance bonus is important.Melinda Voss says, "The board believes they provide greater accountability by the systems top leaders. The board also has a general philosophy of basing compensation on performance and achievements."Cornish says the bonuses are just a round-about way of increasing the presidents' salaries. He says the money should go towards more important things.Tony Cornish says, "Take back the bonuses and give them to the students thereby accordingly reduce the student fees or put it into a ball field the students will use. Then they're asking for more tuition and raising student fees essentially and these guys are getting bonuses. It's not right."MnSCU says the bonuses are expected to be handed out tomorrow. In Mankato, Bryan Piatt, News 12.
