Area Business Members Learn How To Prevent The Flu From Spreading

Good evening, I'm Dion Cheney. And I'm Nicole Winters, thanks for joining us.Health officials are hard at working preparing for a possible flu outbreak.Today in St. Peter, area business members were filled in on what they need to know to prevent the virus from spreading.News 12's Bryan Piatt reports. Keeping the flu from spreading is nothing new to Joan Steinhaus who works at an assisted living center.Joan Steinhaus says, "I Just want to be on top of it."That's why she was up early to listen to members of Nicollet County Public Health and River's Edge Hospital. They encouraged anyone who is showing flu-like symptoms to stay home from work and asked employers to be flexible with their staff.Karen Swenson says, "Making it easy for them to call in and say I'm sick, I have a sick child. I have to stay home."Health officials say anyone who has been sick should not go back to work until they are fever free.Karen Swenson says, "A fever is defined as anything above 100 degrees. You need to stay home as long as you have a fever until that fever is gone for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing meds such as Tylenol, Motrin and Advil."Bryan Piatt says, "Also touched on today are plans to turn Rivers Edge Hospital into a flu center to treat patients if there is a major flu outbreak. Each county in Minnesota has to have plans for one but it's unsure what it will take for one to be opened."Kristin Schultz says, "It's going to depend on the severity of the illness and the number of people who are ill in each county. I think we could see pockets throughout the state where we have illness that requires the opening of the flu center."Joan says managing the flu can be overwhelming but she learned important information today.Joan Steinhaus says "Just the plan that we can follow together and work together as a community."Health officials say they are hoping for the best... but preparing for the worst. In St. Peter, Bryan Piatt News 12.
