Some students in Blue Earth County are learning more than reading, writing, and arithmetic.Today third graders from Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial, Maple River, and St. Clair schools participated in Blue Earth County Farm Bureau Safety Day.News 12s Lisa Cownie has more...It's not a traditional classroom, but the lessons learned here are vital for kids growing up in Southern Minnesota...Leah Davis said, "We hope they learn how to be safe in their rural setting and on the farm, whether it be their parent's farm or their grandparents farm."Lisa Cownie said, "Don't let the name fool you. Today's event is about a lot more than farm safety."William Wallace said, "I've learned to always keep batteries in the smoke alarm, check the door to see if it's hot, and always have a ladder outside the window."After more than 12 years, organizers did make some changes this year, adding food, bicycle, and personal safety.Leah Davis said, "We used to do half day sessions where part of the kids would come in the morning and part in the afternoon, and with the cost of busing kids, it just seemed more worthwhile for districts if they could come get a full day of education."With nine stations ranging from fire to chemical safety, educators, too, tout the program.Wendy Smith said, "This is a great opportunity for the kids because it is all hands-on, first experience, it's wonderful."In Garden City, Lisa Cownie, News 12.
