Senator Amy Klobuchar Pays Visit To Darfur

The population of Darfur may be less than one hundred and fifty, but today close to a third of the town came together to talk.News 12's Jennifer Hudspeth has more about the town meeting, why Senator Amy Klobuchar was there, and what Darfur is doing to help their first responders. The Darfur fire hall may look nice from the outside, but the inside is a different story...Mayor John Schumann says, "It was just a garage that has a leaking roof, and moldy walls."Those are just a few of the buildings problems, parts of the ceiling are falling down in places...not to mention it's not even big enough to house some of the firetrucks. But talk of a new fire hall, for the volunteers who make up the department, has people excited.Ronald Marks says, "We need something, It'd be great, it'd be awesome to have a new fire hall, I think we could help get new members and keep new members with the pride of a new building."It's a discussion that's important to the community and today Senator Amy Klobuchar was there to listen.Klobuchar says, "You have to have these services or it's very dangerous for people in a town and that's why having updated equipment and an updated fire station is incredibly important for a small town like this."Jennifer Hudspeth says, "This is where the future fire hall would be built, it's a project that could cost about 290,000 dollars. The good news is Darfur qualifies for a 44,000 dollar grant from the USDA, the not so good news is the town will need 200,000 in a loan. It's a number that's raising some concerns."Schumann says, "I think we can do it, we'll probably need some help but it's an attainable goal, it's just it's a large amount of money for a community this size."A chunk of change the town is hoping to have help with, possibly state funds or even stimulus money.Regardless, the plan for a new hall is still in action.Schumann says, "We're going ahead, and taking one step at time."For the volunteer fire department, it's a step in the right direction. In Darfur, Jennifer Hudspeth News 12.
