Hunters say you always remember your first deer.Very few get to recall the story of their first moose.Fox Mankato's Ryan Gustafson tells us about one area hunter who will get to do just that... in record-breaking fashion.Having your name in the record books is every hunter's dream.Being the youngest Minnesotan to drop a bull-moose - now that's legendary.12-year-old Kelly Holmin of Nicollet did just that last week Tuesday, picking off the eleven hundred pound animal from 75 yards away.Kelly Holmin says, "He was running when I shot again, and all of a sudden he just collapsed, and was just like ORRRRR - Which means I got him."The 58-inch across antlers and more than 400 pounds of moose meat were the lone physical remainders of Kelly's big haul today. The rest of the carcass is being tanned, to eventually be stuffed and used as the centerpiece at her father's taxidermy shop.Jeff Holmin says, "I shot mine 3 years ago and this was far more exciting watching her shoot hers than me shooting mine."She has already hunted for turkey, grouse and whitetail deer - though don't call her a tomboy just yet.Kelly says, "I'm like, completely a girly-girl. But I love canoeing and I love hunting."Jeff Holmin says, "Expose them to the different things that are out here, and if they find an interest in it, more than happily take them along and expose them to everything that's out there."Dad has had some fun with Kelly's accomplishment, saying it's all downhill from here. But she sees it a differently.Kelly says, "This is going to be the biggest animal that I shoot probably - but it's definitely just a start. I want to do a lot more."In Nicollet, Ryan Gustafson, The Fox Mankato News At Nine.
