Nicollet County Allowing Workers To Barrow Sick Time

Counties across the state are taking action to make it easier for their workers to stay home sick.News 12's Ryan Gustafson reports on the newest tools being used to stave off the H1N1 virus. At the Nicollet County Administration Building, county workers have plenty of interaction with citizens, and each other.Which is why the county has made such an effort to curb the spread of disease.Chris Wersal says, "We gave them tools within the workplace clean - public work areas clean. We have touch less hand sanitizer at all the work stations. But most of all we encouraged them, that if they were sick, to please stay home."Yesterday, the county took it a step further, allowing workers to borrow up to a week of sick leave from 2010 if they run out from this year's stash. An identical action taken by Blue Earth County two weeks ago.Dennis McCoy says, "We really don't want them coming to work, infecting the public, infecting the work place and that's a huge cultural shift, where you're typically trying to get people to do as much work as you can - if they're able to and they're not contagious. But in this case, we've changed that."The policy change will be temporary, and only applies to illness, rather than injury. It's an attempt to keep as many people healthy as possible.Wersal says, "We're doing that to make it easier for the employees to make the right decision to stay home. It would be really easy for the employee who needs that paycheck to say I'm going to work today because I don't have leave time and making other people sick and themselves maybe sicker."Neither county is in need of the extra days immediately, but no hurt in being prepared. In St. Peter, Ryan Gustafson, News 12..
